From the biological point of view diabetes is essentially a disease related to digestive system where the pancreas in the body is unable to produce its secretion caled as insulin.Insulin is the hormone which is responsible for metabolism of glucose in the food by converting it into higher sugars.Now since the insulin is not produced or produced in very little quantity, the glucose in the blood increases as they are not absorbed and thereby increases the sugar content in urine.

Causes of diabetes

Diabetes can be categorised into type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is essentially genetic in origin and often found in people from their childhood or adolescence

Type 2 diabetes is seen mainly in people above 35-40s and is caused mainly by

  • Overeating
  • Smoking
  • Obesity/ High Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Tension
  • Absence of exercise
  • Improper lifestyle

Why controlling diabetes is important?

Diabetes can lead to various other complications like glaucoma, polysuria where there is too much urine pass. It also adversely affects the functioning of kidney.

It can lead to increased fatigue as there is improper metabolism of glucose and increases the urge to overeat to compensate for the glucose loss.This increases the risk of obesity all the more.

It also causes various foot complications and can cause lesions.It can cause gangrene and ulcer problems too.It causes vaious skin infections and any wound in a diabeteic person takes a very long time to heal.

Risk of diabetes in India

India is called the diabetes capital of world and rate of increase of diabetic patients is highest in developing countries like India due to change in lifestyle.

According to WHO estimate 70% of population of India is pre-diabetic which means they are on the borderline of diabetes and without lifestyle alteration, they are in creased risk of getting diabetes.

Yogic management of Diabetes

Yoga is quite effective in curing diabetes because it affects not only physically but also mentally thereby removing the stress which is also the main cause of diabetes.
